I use paint because I am infatuated by the various ways in which it behaves. I can control it, or I can lose control of it. The fluid properties of paint allow me to push, pull, and play with control (or lack thereof); however, this series, I dealt with paint as a solid collage element for the first time. The paint objects in my works are poured, dried, peeled, and adhered to each composition. Liquid paint, directly applied to the ground, is juxtaposed with solid, “unpainted” paint objects to emphasize the similarities and differences between the two application techniques. While my previous work was focused solely in oil paint, the products of this series incorporate various types of paint represented in a cross-medium fashion, including aspects of painting, collage, and sculpture. Thoughts surrounding displacement, cohabitation, and personal acceptance of control over entities influence the making of these works.
